Here’s the honest reality: if you’re traveling from Bogotá, Madrid, Buenos Aires, Seoul, Tokyo, or Johannesburg to experience the 2026 World Cup, you’ll be in Mexico for at least 7 days — and most likely 10 to 14. The official host cities are Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, but the matches are spread out over several days. So what do you do during the downtime?
For most international fans in 2026, the answer will be the same one travelers have chosen for decades when visiting Mexico for any reason: head to Cancun.
All-inclusive resorts, Caribbean beaches, cenotes, Mayan ruins, incredible gastronomy, and vibrant nightlife — all concentrated within a 130 km radius around an airport that operates 24 hours a day.
Higher perceived safety. For the average international traveler, the tourist areas of Cancun and the Riviera Maya generally have a stronger reputation for safety and comfort than navigating urban transportation in major metropolitan cities.
A real reward between matches. Beaches, snorkeling, cenotes, Tulum, Chichén Itzá, and Xcaret. After an intense match, relaxing in the Caribbean feels completely different than going back to a city hotel.
This doesn’t mean you have to stay in Cancun for all five weeks. It means Cancun serves as a smart travel base: you arrive, relax, fly to your match, return to the beach, and repeat.

Be careful with Mexico city airports
Mexico City has two airports: the traditional Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX), which is expected to be heavily congested during the World Cup, and the newer Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), located about 50 km from downtown. If you fly with Volaris or VivaAerobus, there’s a high chance you’ll land at AIFA. Transportation from AIFA to Estadio Banorte can take up to 90 minutes on match days due to traffic, so make sure to plan with extra time.

Tulum
1 hour 45 minutes south. A boutique-style vibe with smaller beachfront hotels, premium dining, and cenotes just 10 minutes away. Less practical for frequent airport trips, but ideal if your World Cup experience is centered around just one match and you prefer a higher-quality travel experience.
Transfers: The part almost nobody plans for
If your plan includes 1, 2, or 3 flights to attend matches, you’ll likely make between 4 and 8 trips between your hotel and Cancun Airport during your stay. Poorly planned logistics can turn into a disaster. Well planned, they make the difference between enjoying your trip and feeling stressed.
