Cancun is not an official host city for the 2026 World Cup, but it is probably the best place in Mexico to base your trip if you want to combine football with a vacation. This guide explains why — and how to do it right.

Why Cancun works as the perfect base

Here’s the honest reality: if you’re traveling from Bogotá, Madrid, Buenos Aires, Seoul, Tokyo, or Johannesburg to experience the 2026 World Cup, you’ll be in Mexico for at least 7 days — and most likely 10 to 14. The official host cities are Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, but the matches are spread out over several days. So what do you do during the downtime?
For most international fans in 2026, the answer will be the same one travelers have chosen for decades when visiting Mexico for any reason: head to Cancun.
All-inclusive resorts, Caribbean beaches, cenotes, Mayan ruins, incredible gastronomy, and vibrant nightlife — all concentrated within a 130 km radius around an airport that operates 24 hours a day.
- Accommodation can be 3 to 5 times cheaper. Hotels in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey are expected to triple their rates around match dates, while Cancun resorts will mostly maintain regular summer season pricing.
- A 24/7 international airport with direct flights to all 3 host cities. Volaris and VivaAerobus operate multiple daily departures to Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. Short flights: a maximum of 2 hours and 42 minutes.
- Much greater hotel capacity. Cancun has more than 100,000 hotel rooms available, making it almost impossible to become fully saturated the way the host cities likely will during the World Cup.
-
Higher perceived safety. For the average international traveler, the tourist areas of Cancun and the Riviera Maya generally have a stronger reputation for safety and comfort than navigating urban transportation in major metropolitan cities.
-
A real reward between matches. Beaches, snorkeling, cenotes, Tulum, Chichén Itzá, and Xcaret. After an intense match, relaxing in the Caribbean feels completely different than going back to a city hotel.
This doesn’t mean you have to stay in Cancun for all five weeks. It means Cancun serves as a smart travel base: you arrive, relax, fly to your match, return to the beach, and repeat.
For many fans — especially those traveling with family — this type of trip is considerably better than spending the entire tournament in expensive, overcrowded urban hotels.
Mexico will host 13 of the 104 matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup: five at Estadio Banorte (formerly Estadio Azteca) in Mexico City, four at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, and four at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey. As one of the host nations, the Mexican National Team will play all three of its group stage matches on Mexican soil. The final will take place on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Direct flights from Cancun to the host cities
This is the key factor that makes the entire plan viable. Cancun International Airport (CUN) has exceptional domestic connectivity to all three World Cup host cities, mainly operated by Volaris, VivaAerobus, and Aeroméxico. All three are well-established Mexican airlines with solid reputations and regular flight operations.
|
CUN → MEX
2:00 hrs
Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) or Mexico City International Airport (MEX / Benito Juárez). Multiple daily flights operated by Volaris, VivaAerobus, and Aeroméxico. |
|
CUN → GDL
2:42 hrs
Miguel Hidalgo International Airport (GDL). Approximately 43 direct flights per week operated by Volaris and VivaAerobus. |
|
CUN → MTY
2:30 hrs
Mariano Escobedo International Airport (MTY). Up to 26 direct flights per week operated by Volaris, VivaAerobus, and Magnicharters.
|
|
Be careful with Mexico city airports
Mexico City has two airports: the traditional Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX), which is expected to be heavily congested during the World Cup, and the newer Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), located about 50 km from downtown. If you fly with Volaris or VivaAerobus, there’s a high chance you’ll land at AIFA. Transportation from AIFA to Estadio Banorte can take up to 90 minutes on match days due to traffic, so make sure to plan with extra time.

Where to stay in Cancun during the world cup
Three areas, three different vibes. Your choice depends on how many days you’ll stay and how close to the airport you want to sleep between matches.
Zona Hotelera de Cancún (Boulevard Kukulkan)
The classic option: 25 km of beaches lined with large all-inclusive resorts. Perfect if you want maximum comfort between matches and flights. Hotels like Hard Rock Hotel Cancun, Live Aqua Beach Resort Cancun, Marriott Cancun, Hyatt Ziva Cancun, Krystal Grand Cancun, and Beach Palace. Just 25 minutes from the airport by private transfer.
50 minutes south of the airport. A more cosmopolitan atmosphere, nightlife on 5th Avenue, and a better base if you plan to visit Tulum, Cobá, or cenotes. Hotels like Mayakoba, Iberostar Selection Paraiso, Bahia Principe Grand Tulum, and Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen Resort. It’s the option we most recommend to European and Latin American travelers.
Tulum
1 hour 45 minutes south. A boutique-style vibe with smaller beachfront hotels, premium dining, and cenotes just 10 minutes away. Less practical for frequent airport trips, but ideal if your World Cup experience is centered around just one match and you prefer a higher-quality travel experience.
Transfers: The part almost nobody plans for

If your plan includes 1, 2, or 3 flights to attend matches, you’ll likely make between 4 and 8 trips between your hotel and Cancun Airport during your stay. Poorly planned logistics can turn into a disaster. Well planned, they make the difference between enjoying your trip and feeling stressed.
What we do not recommend
Airport taxis at 4:00 AM when you have a 6:00 AM flight, with no flight monitoring and subject to “night rates.” Uber/DiDi at Cancun Airport: they do not officially operate at the terminals. Shared shuttles: they make multiple stops and could cause you to miss your flight to the match.
What actually works
A prepaid private transfer with real-time flight monitoring, fixed 24/7 pricing (no night surcharges), and the flexibility to schedule all your World Cup transportation in advance. At Link Shuttle, multi-transfer plans for international fans are already one of our most requested categories for 2026 — allowing you to organize all your transportation through a single point of contact with preferred rates.
Watching the Matches from Cancun (Without Traveling to the Host City)
Not every fan coming to the 2026 World Cup will have tickets to live matches. Many are coming for the overall atmosphere and celebration. Cancun during June–July 2026 will be packed with places to watch football:
FIFA Fan Festival — Cancun will feature official fan zones with giant screens throughout the tournament, plus entertainment, food, and a vibrant atmosphere.
All-inclusive resorts — major hotels will set up screens at pool decks and restaurants for all the most important matches.
International venues — Hard Rock Cafe Cancun, Señor Frog's Cancun, and Coco Bongo Cancun will host watch parties covering most of the matches.
Local bars in Playa del Carmen and Tulum — a more authentic option for fans looking to experience a genuine Mexican football atmosphere.
10 tips for international fans
2. Bring at least $200 USD in cash (in Mexican pesos). It’s useful for tips, unplanned taxis, food trucks, and small local shops.
6. Purchase your 2026 FIFA World Cup tickets only through official channels. FIFA.com is the only official source. Be careful with fraudulent resale offers.
8. Don’t rent a car if you plan to visit Mexico City or Guadalajara. Parking, traffic, and fines make Uber or taxis a much more practical option in those cities..
